Midlife Crisis Test


  • Mistrusts friends, family, and work associates
  • Expresses unhappiness with spouse/life/family/job, enjoys life less
  • Low self-esteem/feels increasingly inadequate
  • Euphoric/high-energy OR depressed/sad/low-energy OR alternating between the two
  • Has excess nervous energy - nervous or anxious, sometimes paranoid
  • Frequently irritable/irritated/grumpy
  • Uncharacteristically, suddenly hostile
  • Angry over obligations to others, particularly financial obligations to spouse and children
  • Frustrated that income is spent on others
  • Worries excessively
  • Increasingly forgetful about appointments, deadlines, and dates

  • Loses interest in activities previously enjoyed OR picks up new hobbies
  • Angry at God / quits going to church
  • Frequently daydreams about the good old days of youth
  • Music listening habits center on romance songs from teen or college years 

  • Lacks energy
  • Changes sleeping habits/Falls asleep after dinner or can’t sleep
  • Feels out of shape
  • Recently started working out, bought a new wardrobe or a new car
  • Loses height
  • Strength and/or endurance decrease
  • Constantly criticizes and blames spouse
  • Shows less sexual interest in spouse
  • Does not respond to spouse’s attempts to repair marriage
  • Has an increased feeling of euphoria when talking to someone of the opposite sex
  • Fantasizes about having a sexual affair
  • Libido decreases

  • Tells spouse that affair partner or potential affair partner is “just a friend”
  • Tells spouse suddenly “I no longer love you” or “I love you but I’m not in love with you.”
  • Has a new group of friends kept away from spouse; they are either younger or divorced
  • Drinks more/goes out to bars, often with younger people
